I am trying to render both am image and a mathematical expression in GitHub Markdown. The mathematical expression isn’t in the same cell as the image, yet as soon as I write it the image disappear.

I cannot use the stackoverflow’s Markdown renderer to show this issue at it does not behave exactly as the one used by GitHub, but I created a gist that you may access here to illustrate.

Did anyone encouter the same issue and find a workaround ?
Any help is appreciated, as well as any correction in my question.
