Is Perforce as good at merging as DVCSs?

I’ve heard that Perforce is very good at merging, I’m guessing this has to do with that it tracks changes in the form of changelists where you can add differences across several files in a single blow. I think this implies Perforce gathers more metadata and therefore has more information to do smarter merging (at least smarter than Subversion, being Perforce centralized).

p4: how to add link to external folder

Suppose that I have a large 3rd party source folder that I want to add to p4. If I directly add the folder to p4 via ‘p4 add’, p4 GUI will no longer function normally. It says “the selected Workspace folder has more than 1000000 depot files”.

P4 switch (stream), but only partially

I have two streams. They are both children development streams of a parent mainline stream that contains two folders, a smaller (let’s say 400GB) and a larger (let’s say 2TB) folder.

Perforce after update no longer will run

After doing an update to Perforce it will no longer run. I have fixed a few things, like adding the P4PORT env variable to the master.conf file. This wasn’t needed before.
